Happy New Year! First, I’d like to say THANK YOU all for your generous donations during our year-end giving campaign, and throughout 2022. We are gearing up for an exciting and busy second year. It would not be possible without your continued support.

Hello! My name is Susie Cover, and I am the newly appointed Executive Director of the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund. I am beyond thrilled to be a part of this fast-growing and deeply meaningful organization.

It is with great pleasure that we share this incredible book of artwork with you, produced by our first class of ASLF Apprentices. Our work corps dedicated 5,000 hours to sustainable farms this year and have truly launched a revolution in so many ways — a nation of talent is sure to follow in their footsteps.

It’s time to look ahead, but we don’t really want to, and it feels uncomfortable to do so. Anne once wrote, “I hope I can continue to do this job until I am old, well-aged, and hopefully more complex! Like a good wheel of cheese.”

A peak into the summer of our first class of apprentices.

Our first season has been an amazing success — Anne’s energy is truly making a significant difference in the world! Thirty-three Apprentices have either departed and returned home, or still have a few days left of farm work on their monthlong adventures!

The dream is coming true, Anne’s spirit and energy is living on in a most important and powerful way through the work of our first Class of Apprentices.

Starting July 5th, these young adults will travel to sustainable farms for one month apprenticeships. We are so excited for them to share their experiences and incredible voices with the world! And we are proud to see Anne’s energy live on through these adventures.

This September 14th from 6-10pm at Chelsea Market in NYC, the market that Anne loved so much, a special food event will take place featuring amazing bites and drinks from Anne’s favorite chefs and artisans! Tickets on sale on now!

On the 7th month since Anne passed, and 5 days since her Saxelby Cheesemongers turned 16, we are humbled and proud to announce a major event and the coming together of so many different energies and talents to honor Anne’s life. On the 6th month since Anne passed, we do as she commanded through her everyday actions living life to its fullest, always looking forward, always with a smile no matter what.

Up until recently our family avoided contemplating death as no one close to us had ever died, we had always been healthy, and cemeteries and places that housed sick people were in far off neighborhoods we seldom encountered. We knew little about religion — even at the funeral, we chose only for Anne’s father Bill, not a priest or rabbi, to address the large crowd that gathered.

Anne once wrote “Breakfast is my favorite meal of the day, so if I can stretch it out a bit and have two (or even two and a half), I’m all for it.” Anne woke up early and packed every moment with accomplishment — joyfully filling the days for three kids, exercising, cooking creatively (with the varied scraps going to the worms in her three-story compost bin), reading, writing, drawing paintings which hang on the walls of our home, and running the sales, marketing, and farm relations for her pioneering American cheese business — all the while a perfect neighbor, attentive, elegant, and gracious.

Victory Cheese is a volunteer, grass-roots collective of cheese professionals including cheesemakers, mongers, chefs, and cheese guilds across the country, uniting to help our industry weather the challenges of the past two years.

Since Anne passed, we are always on the lookout for signs of her — and we see her a lot, like when it snows on Christmas, or when a bee lands on our hand, or when we find the perfect parking spot right in front of our building. Basically, we feel Anne’s presence when we are lucky, and when good things happen to us. These moments give us all great joy!

It has been exactly two months since our beloved Anne Saxelby tragically passed away. But because of her great spirit and energy, there has been a tremendous outpouring of support for the Anne Saxelby Legacy Fund (ASLF)! Thank you so much for your help to get us started!

It is with great sorrow that we write you this note because Anne is no longer with us. We all adored Anne, her playful whimsical radiant energy, grace, unpretentiousness, and love she gave to everyone she crossed paths with. From her tiny shop at Essex Market her smile and hard work changed the way Americans buy food. She was a remarkable entrepreneur, colleague, neighbor, friend, mother, wife, sister, and daughter who realized in only 40 years many lifetimes of accomplishments. She is missed every single day and we will forever ache that she left us so soon.
